how to use a jade scalp comb

A jade scalp comb is one of the simplest tools you can bring into your hair care. It is a single piece of stone with smooth, rounded teeth, heavy enough to feel solid in your hand and cool the moment it touches your scalp. Used slowly, it gives you a few quiet minutes that are just for you. Here is how we use ours, step by step, with Guada, our herbal hair oil, and how to care for the comb so it stays in good shape.

what the comb does

The comb does two things at once. The first is the massage. The weight of the stone gives you steady, even pressure without having to push hard, and the rounded teeth glide smoothly along your scalp. Jade stays cool to the touch, so the first strokes feel fresh and calming, especially at the end of a hot day. It also makes a soft, low sound as it moves through your hair, and many people find that sound soothing on its own.

The second is the oil. Your fingertips are wonderful for massage, and the teeth of the comb add something to it: they carry the oil along your parts and spread it evenly from your front hairline to the nape of your neck, so your whole scalp gets its share.

Most of all, it slows you down. A few minutes of slow, steady strokes is a lovely way to settle your breathing and give your full attention to yourself.

You can use the comb on its own, on dry hair, any time you want a few minutes of calm. Our favorite way is with oil, as a treatment before wash day or in the evening before bed.

  1. Section your hair. Part your hair into four sections, or more if it is thick or curly, so you can reach your scalp easily.
  2. Apply the oil to your scalp. Apply Guada along each part, straight onto the scalp, and be generous: plenty of oil is what lets the comb glide smoothly.
  3. Start at the hairline. Rest the teeth of the comb flat against your scalp at your front hairline. Let the weight of the stone settle, then move it back toward the crown in short, slow strokes.
  4. Work in small circles. Every few strokes, pause and make small circles in place, then keep moving. Go section by section: the front, both sides, the crown, and down to the nape of your neck.
  5. Take your time. Five to ten minutes makes a good session. Breathe slowly as you go.
  6. Bring the oil to your ends. Once your scalp is done, smooth the rest of the oil through the lengths of your hair with your hands. On curly and coily hair, keep the comb on the scalp and use your fingers for the lengths, so your curls stay defined.
  7. Leave it on. Let the oil sit as a treatment before you wash, or overnight with your hair wrapped in a silk scarf or bonnet. On curls, Guada smoothed over damp hair after washing also works as a daily seal.

If you wear braids, twists or other protective styles, work the comb gently along the parts between them and apply the oil right at the scalp. The complete Guada gift set includes a small roll-on of the same oil, which makes those narrow parts easy to reach.

scalp massage technique: pressure, pace and breath

It comes down to three things.

Pressure. Let the stone do the work. Its weight gives you most of the pressure you need, so hold it with a relaxed hand and press a bit more only where it feels good. You want to feel it, and you want it to stay comfortable the whole time. If a spot feels tender, lighten your touch there and keep going.

Pace. Go slowly. Short, unhurried strokes let the teeth glide through the oil and keep your hair from tangling around the comb.

Breath. Breathe in as you draw the comb back and breathe out as you make your circles. Matching your breath to the strokes helps you slow down and settle into it, and you may notice your shoulders relax along the way.

how often should you use a jade scalp comb?

As often as it feels good. If you are wondering how often to use a scalp comb, here is the rhythm we like: a full oil session with Guada once or twice a week, on wash day or the night before, and a few quick minutes on dry hair whenever you want to reset during the day, at your desk, before bed, or after a long drive.

Listen to your scalp. On days it feels tender, use lighter pressure and shorter sessions. On days you want to unwind, give yourself the full ten minutes.

caring for your jade comb

Each piece of jade has its own natural markings and color, so no two combs look exactly alike. Jade is solid stone, and it can chip or break if it falls onto a hard floor. A few simple habits keep it in good shape: use it sitting down or over a towel, hold it with a relaxed, steady grip, and set it down gently on a soft surface when you pause.

Here is how to clean a jade comb after an oil session: rinse it under warm water with a mild soap, wipe the teeth with a soft cloth, and let it dry completely on a towel. Then store it in a soft pouch or in its own spot in a drawer, where it can rest safely until next time.
